August is Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month. With the school year about to start, it is important to keep your kids’ eyes healthy and safe. After all, 80% of what is taught inside the classroom involves visual learning. Failing to look after your children’s visual health and wellness can lead to problems that may interfere with their performance at school and even affect their safety.
Vision Care Plus, home of your local family eye care specialists, provides five tips to help you safeguard your children’s visual health.
1. Eat an Eye-Friendly Diet
As a parent, make eye-friendly foods a part of your family’s daily diet. These include green, leafy vegetables, oily fish like tuna and salmon, non-meat proteins like eggs and nuts, and citrus fruits. These foods contain nutrients that are essential for the eyes such as zinc, vitamins A and E, and lutein.
2. Get Enough Rest
Encourage your kids to get plenty of sleep. Being well rested refreshes the entire body, including the eyes, helping preserve sharp vision and overall eye health.
3. Protect the Eyes From the Sun
Your optometrist emphasizes the importance of protecting your children’s eyes from the sun. Remind them not to stare directly at the sun. Let them know that the ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun can cause eye damage. Your children should always wear sunglasses when spending time outside.
4. Limit Your Kids’ Screen Time
Children today enjoy screen time as much, if not more, than adults. Too much exposure to digital devices, however, can result in eye strain, blurred vision and dry eyes. That’s why it’s important to limit their usage of such gadgets, especially at night.
5. Schedule a Comprehensive Eye Exam
Children under the age of five years old should undergo yearly eye exams, while school-aged children should have their eyes checked every two years, or at their doctor’s discretion. The examination helps detect refractive errors early in their childhood, as well as any vision problems like lazy eye or color blindness.
