Many people tend to ignore their visual health until a disturbing symptom appears. This shouldn’t be the case because your eyes need regular care. Typically, experts recommend a comprehensive eye health exam every one to two years.
Eye symptoms can sometimes be early signs of underlying conditions like cancer, diabetes or a stroke. That’s why being proactive about your visual health can literally be life-saving.
In this article, eye care doctors at Vision Care Plus list three eye symptoms that you should never ignore. If you experience any of these, make sure to have your eyes checked as soon as possible.
1. Itching and Burning Sensation
Inflammation is often the reason behind the itching and burning sensation you feel. This condition is known as blepharitis, and it is often caused by bacteria or microscopic mites that live on the eyelids. A quick remedy for this is baby shampoo mixed with warm water.
Other possible causes of itching and burning are styes, infections or an inflammation of the eyelid’s oil gland. Compresses are typically used to allow a “pimple of the eyelid” to drain.
2. Drifting Cobwebs or Flashes of Light
This symptom is common among older people, and it’s caused by the vitreous body in the back chamber of the eyeball, which becomes more liquid and develops floaters over time. These floaters often look like specks or cobwebs, and they’re usually harmless. However, if you notice an increase in the number of floaters in your field of vision, it’s time to consult with a doctor. There’s a possibility that your retina and the blood vessels in your eye have been torn. If you’re seeing flashes of light, this could be a sign of retinal detachment. If left untreated, this could lead to permanent vision loss.
3. Double Vision
Seeing double when both of your eyes are open could mean that your eye muscles aren’t properly aligned. If you experience double vision in one eye only, this could be a sign of cataracts or an issue related to the retina. Doctors typically require an MRI or CAT scan if it’s a neurological problem. In the case of muscular misalignment, vision can be corrected by special prism eyeglasses.
